Sexual orientation discrimination claims are on the increase.
Sorry to disappoint!
When comparing 2015-2016 to 2019-2020 we can see that sexual orientation discrimination claims have increased by 165%. That’s a big increase.
So are we becoming older and more bigoted? I would suggest not.
In some ways it points to the reverse. It points to people having more awareness and feeling stronger about their rights. It also points to a feeling that they will be taken seriously in the court of law.
Arguably this greater awareness of discrimination and confidence to bring a claim is allied with faith that they can now access justice is a big driver in the growth of these claims.
I don’t think employers have become more bigoted.
However, while everything has moved and shifted around them, some employers have remained static!
